ADA Compliance Services in NJ, PA, and DE
A lot goes into running a successful business. Many business owners work hard to come up with a great business model, develop extensive marketing, and hire the best candidates. However, for your business to reach all of your customers, all of your customers need to be able to reach your business. Whether you’re in the initial planning phases of construction or are looking at ways to improve your facilities, you need to consider Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance.
At American Asphalt, our team of professionals performs line striping and other services that can help you create parking lots, sidewalks, and more that comply with ADA laws. Serving clients in New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Northern Delaware, we invite you to learn more about how we can help you ensure ADA compliance.
What Is the ADA?
The ADA stands for the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is a federal civil rights law that was passed by President George Bush in July of 1990. This act was put in place to help prevent discrimination against those with disabilities. This act works like other civil rights laws that protect against discrimination based on sex, race, age, and other factors.
The ADA is designed to help ensure that those with disabilities are given the same opportunities. It can be broken down into five sections, which are known as titles. These include employment, state and local government services, public transit, businesses that are open to the public, and telecommunications.
ADA Compliance and Businesses
For your business to stay within ADA regulations, you’ll need to consider a few different areas when it comes to your building’s exterior. Some of the most common considerations are:
Parking Spaces
If you own a business, you’ll most likely need accessible parking spaces. These parking spaces are designed differently than standard parking spaces and must be located on the closest accessible route to your accessible entrance. The number of required accessible parking spaces depends on the total number of spaces in the parking structure, but you can view the chart from the ADA to see exactly how many you need. Because each parking structure is considered separately, you’ll need to make sure to calculate the correct number for each.
Access Aisles
Access aisles are spaces next to accessible parking spaces that are designed to allow safe and comfortable mobility for those with disabilities and their caretakers. Whether they are using a wheelchair, a walker, crutches, or a cane, these areas provide the space they need. Access aisles must be properly marked to prohibit parking and should be level with the adjacent spaces.
Van Accessible Spaces
Spaces for vans either need to be wider or must have an adjacent access aisle of equal width. This allows them to accommodate the mechanism inside the van that allows passengers to enter and exit safely. These spaces must also have at least 98” of vertical clearance to prevent the top of the van from getting hit.
Why Is Compliance So Important?
Safety should be the main concern for any business owner when it comes to their customers and employees. Having the proper accessible areas allows everyone who comes by the ability to enter and exit your facility securely and without unnecessary strain. You don’t want anyone getting injured or reaching out to the government because you failed to follow the ADA’s legal requirements.
